More on Wine Stained Carpets
Wine is fun, right? It’s sophisticated. It can help you decompress after a hard day at work, or approach that attractive person at the bar. Drinking it in a beautiful wine glass makes you look like you have refined taste. Who knew that fermented grapes could be so much fun?
That is, until you bump your glass with your arm, and suddenly there’s red wine all over your carpet.
Not as much fun anymore.
Luckily, there are solutions. This is the internet after all; there are ways to fix everything. Well, maybe. If you’ve got a big old wine stain on your carpet right now, and you don’t want your apartment to look like you murdered someone, feel free to read on!
Before you use any of these methods, remember to blot stains, not scrub at them. Scrubbing can work the stain deeper into the carpet, and you really don’t want that, do you?
Table salt is your best friend.
Apply a thick layer of salt over the fresh spill as soon as possible. Afterwards, let it sit for an hour, and then vacuum it all up. It does a good job of absorbing all that wine, but usually works best within the first two minutes after the spill. Pour club soda on the area and then add the salt, and you could see even better results!
Dish-washing liquid and hydrogen peroxide is tough on stains too.
This will lift the stain out, and get rid of that unsightly red color. Your white carpet will thank you. Again, the sooner you act, the better the results, but it’s general consensus that this combination works very well for removing even the most stubborn wine stains. If you don’t have one or both of these things, try any cleaner with ‘oxi’ in the ingredients. It’s effectively the same thing as combining dish detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Another little tip: pour cold water over the stain and soak it up before adding whatever solution you choose. It dilutes the harsh color and makes it easier to blot the mess away.
Try…kitty litter.
Apparently, the chemicals in kitty litter will absorb the wine, much like salt does. Pour a good thick layer (not too thick!) onto the spot in question, and then vacuum everything up once you’ve let it sit. The vacuuming minimizes mess afterwards. If you spill on your couch or on a shirt, this method works for those materials as well.
What NOT to do:
· Don’t let the wine sit. It’ll just make the removal process a lot harder. If you want good results, act quickly!
· Don’t apply white wine. This tip doesn’t do anything, despite what you may have heard.
· Don’t apply dry heat, like a hair dryer, to the area. Boiling water is a safer method.
There you have it, wine-drinkers of the internet. How, in the event of a spill, not to feel too sad about it. You can go back to enjoying your red wine in peace now. Call (707) 358-3050 now for free estimates.
